1. Sharp Increase in Income: Salim Uddin Tarafdar (Torofdar), the former MP for Naogaon-3, has seen his annual income rise dramatically from 483,000 BDT in 2014 to 67.75 million BDT in 2023, a 140-fold increase.
2. Substantial Asset Growth: Over the past 10 years, Tarafdar’s immovable assets have grown by nearly 28 times, and his movable assets have increased by 6.5 times. This is based on the affidavit he submitted to the Election Commission for the upcoming election.
3. Political Background: Tarafdar won the Naogaon-3 seat as a “rebel” candidate in 2014, defeating the official Awami League candidate. He was re-elected in 2018 as an Awami League candidate. However, he is running as an independent in the upcoming election after failing to secure the party’s nomination.
4. Educational and Occupational Details: In his 2014 affidavit, Tarafdar listed his education as SSC (Secondary School Certificate), which he later updated to HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate) in 2018. His professional activities have consistently included rice trading, fish farming, and land leasing.
5. Income Sources: Tarafdar declared an income of 600,000 BDT from agriculture and 1.15 million BDT from business. Notably, his income from MP salary and allowances has been listed as 66 million BDT, compared to 660,000 BDT in 2018 and no such income in 2014.
6. Discrepancies in Parliamentary Salary: Despite no official increase in MP salaries, Tarafdar’s income from this source has grown from 660,000 BDT to 66 million BDT, a 100-fold increase. Attempts to contact him for clarification were unsuccessful.
7. Details on Movable Assets: In 2014, his movable assets were valued at 1.84 million BDT, but they have now risen to 12.577 million BDT. His wife’s movable assets have increased from 1.1 million BDT in 2014 to 2.35 million BDT.
8. Immovable Assets: Tarafdar’s immovable assets, primarily land, have also increased significantly. He has declared ownership of 414.42 additional decimals of land, bringing his total agricultural and non-agricultural land value to 33.595 million BDT. He also disclosed new investments in ponds and a fish farm.
9. Wife’s Assets: While his 2014 affidavit did not mention any immovable assets in his wife’s name, the latest affidavit shows she now owns agricultural and non-agricultural land valued at 2.6 million BDT.
