Mohammad Sifayet Chowdhury, a 26-year-old student from Kalia upazila of Narail district, has been struggling to recover after being shot during recent anti-quota protests.
On August 5th, Sifayet was critically injured in Dhaka and subsequently admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. After receiving initial treatment, he was transferred to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) for further care. Upon partial recovery, he was discharged on August 30th and returned to his village home in Chapai, Pohardanga Union.
However, Sifayet’s family is facing immense financial challenges. Due to their limited resources, they are unable to provide him with the necessary medical care and treatment. The family’s primary income comes from the modest earnings of his two elder brothers who work as mosque imams.
Sifayet’s younger brother, Rubel Chowdhury, shared, “We have exhausted all our savings on his treatment. He still needs specialized care and expensive medications. We are struggling to make ends meet.”
The family’s neighbor, Yunus Chowdhury, added, “They are a very poor family. The two brothers barely manage to support their family with their meager earnings. When we heard about Sifayet’s injury, we all contributed to his treatment expenses.”
The Union Parishad Chairman, Mallik Mahmudul Islam, expressed concern for Sifayet’s condition and appealed for assistance. “Sifayet is a young man with a bright future. He needs our support to recover fully. His family is in dire need of financial assistance,” he said.
