Student Abu Saeed (25) was shot while participating in an anti-discrimination student movement. Twelve bullets were removed from his right leg in two surgeries, but 38 bullets remain, causing blood circulation issues in his leg. His leg is swollen and he cannot walk normally. He is suffering from severe pain in the hospital. Abu Saeed and his family are worried about whether his leg will ever recover.

Doctors say that the bullets are lodged near the bones in a risky area, making it impossible to remove them in the country. Removing the bullets could damage his leg, leaving him disabled for life. However, these bullets could be removed through advanced medical treatment abroad.

Regarding the shooting, Abu Saeed said, “On August 4, I participated in the anti-discrimination student movement in solidarity with the students’ justified demands. When we were taking out a protest procession towards the city court, a clash occurred with the police. During that time, I was hit by 50 bullet splinters in my right leg. I fell to the ground immediately. The people around me rescued me and took me to the Sadar Hospital. I was discharged from the hospital that day after having a bandage on my leg. The doctor told me to have surgery after the wound healed. Due to lack of money, I could not get advanced treatment.”

Saeed’s father Zulfiqar Ali said, “On August 6, we admitted our son to a private clinic for treatment. Later, we took him to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College. The doctors removed 12 bullets in two surgeries. Later, when we took him to Dhaka Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, the doctors said that it was not possible to remove another bullet through surgery. After staying for a few days, we were discharged from the hospital. We have tried our best to treat our son in the country. But it was of no use. A lot of money is needed for complete treatment. We don’t have that much money.”

Unable to walk normally, Abu Saeed said, “I feel a lot of pain when I try to walk. My leg is swollen and I can’t move. I can’t sleep at night due to the pain. In this condition, I was admitted to Dinajpur Medical College again last Sunday. The doctors have said that if I can get advanced treatment abroad, maybe the bullets can be removed.”

With tears in her eyes, Saeed’s mother Bilkis Banu said, “Now the hospital authorities are bearing all the costs of treatment. My only request to the current government is that they should remove the bullets from my only son, even if it means taking him abroad.”

Neighbor and school teacher Jaynal Abedin said, “Saeed’s family is very poor. They are very worried about his treatment. They cannot afford the treatment. Those who are wealthy in society need to come forward. So that this young man can return to a normal life.”
