Saiful Islam Arif (19), who was shot in Debidwar, Cumilla during the anti-discrimination student protests, died on Saturday morning while undergoing treatment at CMH Hospital in Dhaka.
Arif, the eldest son of a farmer from Sindurpur Union, Dagannabhujna Upazila, Feni, was injured on August 5th while participating in the protests. He was initially taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and later transferred to CMH Hospital in Dhaka due to his deteriorating condition.
According to his family, Arif was shot in the head during the protests when Awami League and Chhatra League activists opened fire on the students. Despite undergoing treatment for 35 days, he succumbed to his injuries.
Arif’s mother, Rina Akhtar, demanded justice for her son’s death, stating that he was the sole breadwinner of the family after his father’s death.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Debidwar Police Station, Rafiqul Islam, mentioned that a murder case has been filed against 99 named individuals and 150 unknown persons in connection with the incident.
